Paper Mario: The Origami King is getting pretty good reviews. However, that doesn’t mean it is without problems. A lot of the notes below may seem like trivial matters to some and are thus overlooked.

However, there are other fans that would probably agree that these ten things would help fix Paper Mario. For a game that was announced a couple of months ago, it almost seems like it was also made within those two months. Some of the things missing in the game are quite baffling for a Nintendo title let alone something released on the Switch in 2020. Let’s dig in and find out what’s going on.
10 Speed Up Dialogue
Dialogue is needlessly slow. Players can speed it up if they hear it again but at that point it is too late. Paper Mario should either speed up the text so that it can be skipped through easily and or just allow players to literally skip the entire scene if wanted. There are definitely some conversations and or tutorials that drag on for far too long. Thanks for nothing Olivia.
9 Let Players Save Anywhere
Most RPGs, even many Nintendo ones, include an option to save at any point. Sometimes this involves quick saves that are only temporary while others let them save actual files. Paper Mario only has set Save Points along with an autosave feature. For a system that acts as a portable, every game on Switch should have this feature for quick hop in and hop out sessions.
8 Combine Saves And Benches
Not all, but in some Mario RPG games, the Save Points also heal players. In this game, there are benches one can sit at to regain health. However, too many times were they not together. There aren’t many healing benches by bosses which is particularly unfair. This might change a lot of the game’s mechanics, but it would be nice and simple if these two concepts were combined.
7 Combine Travel Options
Another aspect that should be combined are the travel options. There are warp pipes, faxing machines, trollies, and other modes of transportation.

It makes sense when traveling to a location for the first time like by boat, but after that players should just be able to warp whenever and whenever they want within reason. This seems too simple to get wrong in 2020.
6 Make Mario Run Faster
Granted, Mario doesn’t move as slowly as the text. However, since there is no quick way to fast travel in the game in a more convenient matter, another solution would be to speed Mario up instead. There is a way in the game already. Players can do this at coffee stations strewn throughout the game but the boost is fleeting and not enough shops are around to make this a worthwhile feature.
5 Add Difficulty Levels
Except for boss battles, this game is pretty easy. Some of the puzzles are a bit mind-boggling as well as figuring out the exact way to go, but these moments too are fleeting.

It would be great to see Nintendo implement a set of difficulty levels in order to challenge the more hardcore players looking for one. This isn’t a huge must to make the game better, but this article would not be complete without mentioning it for a certain crowd.
4 Add Lyrics
The dance numbers, along with the music in general in Paper Mario, are fantastically fun. However, it is a bit jarring to read through lyrics without hearing words. This was also weird in Pokémon Sword/Shield when they had cutscenes with mouthed dialogue and no voices. Nintendo is presumably not hurting for money so why are they so shy about voices?
3 Add Experience
This would change the game completely so maybe this fix is more of a plea for the sequel. Paper Mario has not featured a traditional leveling up system since the second game launched on GameCube. Suffice it to say it’s been awhile but in that time a new RPG series was born via Mario and Luigi. Why make two separate RPG series when one is enough? That’s probably why these games have been so experimental. That doesn’t change the fact fans would love to see this become a real RPG again.
2 Non-Breakable Equipment
There is equipment in the game, but like experience points, not in the traditional sense. Mario can equip accessories that grant new abilities like finding Toads as well as boosting health. These are great, but weapons aren’t. They take the form of boots and hammers, but besides the standard issues ones, they all break. There is more than enough money to go around in the game so maybe having them break was a balance to that.
1 Confetti System
The confetti system is essentially a carryover from the last game, Color Splash. It was not received well and yet Nintendo seemingly thought they could get away with bringing back the idea of painting the world but through paper this time. That seems more devious than it probably is, but the point is collecting paper is a needless time sink. Most of these entries boil down to the game just being too slow and overly complicated.
