While Ghost of Tsushima has dominated the mainstream conversation, as the game’s launch on the same date, Paper Mario: The Origami King still has Nintendo fans excited, and that excitement will be rewarded with some not-so-subtle Easter eggs. Specifically, footage has surfaced of Mario trying on hats that are Samus’ helmet from the Metroid games, and Donkey Kong’s head.

Fans may remember the Samus head appearing in the Paper Mario: The Origami King trailer a few months back, but the Donkey Kong head is a surprise. Doubtlessly, there will be more Easter eggs that surface after the game officially launches, after all, Nintendo has a tendency to crossreference its major franchises any time it releases a new game, it’s a large part of the reason some enemies have similar designs in multiple franchises, especially in Nintendo’s older titles.

Hopefully, Metroid and Donkey Kong will be referenced more than just with hats. They’re two of Nintendo’s biggest franchises, and while fans have had little news about the next Metroid game, that doesn’t mean passion for the franchise has faded with Nintendo’s loyal fans. Easter eggs are a big part of any game, but more tend to pop up in RPGs, likely due to game length and the freedom large worlds provide.

Fans do need to be cautious, however, The Origami King leaked online recently, so there are spoilers out in the wild. They aren’t as severe as the leaks The Last of Us 2 suffered, nor are they being as widely circulated, but having a game’s story ruined before it even launches is always a disappointment. For those looking to go in completely unspoiled, it may be best to avoid any major information relating to the game for the next few days.
