The first Paper Mario leak came about in January, when it was claimed that Nintendo would be releasing a Paper Mario game for the Switch, along with a 2D Metroid. The 2D Metroid game has yet to be announced, but it is worth pointing out that the Paper Mario: The Origami King trailer ends with Mario wearing a papier-mache Samus helmet. A couple of months after the leak of Paper Mario and 2D Metroid, other Nintendo games planned for 2020 also leaked online.

These included Nintendo’s plans to celebrate the Super Mario franchise’s 35th anniversary. According to the rumors, Nintendo is prepping a Switch port of Super Mario 3D World, alongside a collection of older 3D Super Mario games in the vein of the Super Mario All-Stars collection. Apparently, this collection will include Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and both Super Mario Galaxy games.

While it’s possible that the Paper Mario: The Origami King announcement is just a coincidence, its reveal does lend more credibility to these old leaks, and indicates that Nintendo fans may have a ton to look forward to this year. If Nintendo is planning these big announcements, though, one has to wonder when exactly it will all take place.

Previously, Nintendo was expected to be hosting a big Nintendo Direct presentation in June to coincide with E3. However, the ongoing coronavirus pandemic has thrown a wrench in those plans, with Nintendo believed to be pushing back its presentation to later in the summer. Speculation points to Nintendo originally planning on announcing Paper Mario: The Origami King at its June Nintendo Direct, which would presumably also be where it announced the Super Mario 3D collection and its other rumored games.

If so, one can expect Nintendo to announce the 3D Super Mario collection and the 2D Metroid at some point late in the summer. Of course, fans can’t rule out that these leaks are still inaccurate, so they should take all of this information with a grain of salt.

Paper Mario: The Origami King launches on July 17, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
