The series was published from 2015 to 2019 and contains 30 volumes and fans can begin watching the series on July 29, 2022.
In Paper Girls, what is sure to be a fan favorite teen TV show, it’s November 1, 1988 and four best friends time travel to 2019. They meet the grown-up versions of themselves and while they want to get back to their regular time, they learn a lot of lessons along the way. Riley Lai Nelet plays Erin Tieng and Ali Wong plays the adult Erin. The other actors include Fina Strazza as KJ Brandman, Camryn Jones as Tiffany Quilkin, and Sofia Rosinsky as Mac Coyle. Stephany Folsom developed the series for TV.
The trailer shows the four girls having fun together and riding bikes while also running from danger and trying to work out how to get back to the past that they know. In one particularly emotionally affecting scene, young Erin knocks on the door of adult Erin and they both stare at each other, with adult Erin saying that this can’t possibly be real. It seems like the two will team up to not only get young Erin back to the past but understand each other better.
While there are several TV shows and movies that show old-fashioned paper boys riding around their neighborhood on bikes and throwing newspapers on doorsteps in the early morning, Paper Girls takes a different approach. Brian K. Vaughan told Entertainment Weekly that he was inspired to write the graphic novel series because he lived in the suburbs of Cleveland and realized that the paper boys stopped working the routes and, instead, paper girls began bringing people the news. Vaughan said that he thought, “’this is such an interesting group of young women. They would make a great heart of a story’” and he was inspired to work on the story.
The young girls like tough, strong characters who accept the strange situation that they’re in and are ready to fight to get back to their regular time period, and it will be interesting to see what adventures they experience.
Paper Girls premieres on Prime Video on July 29, 2022.
